Research Experience

CCCR Fellow

September 2024– Present

Postdoctoral Scholar

August 2023– August 2025

Center for Coastal Climate Resilience California, USA
University of California, Santa Cruz

  • I’m co-leading the development of high-resolution global flood models to quantify the protective role of mangroves and coral reefs in reducing coastal flood risk. The work informs risk management and adaptation investments by assessing current and future exposure of coastal populations and assets.

Research Coordinator

May 2020 – Jan 2022

International Centre for Climate Change and Development
Independent University of Bangladesh

  • I oversaw the Centre’s overall research activities and led research projects on nature-based solutions, WASH, and climate change adaptation. I also supervised early career researchers for research and institutional capacity development. Additionally, I worked in national and international climate policy advisory services.

Graduate Research Fellow

August 2018 – Dec 2020

Virginia Sea Grant Virginia, USA

  • As a Sea Grant Fellow, I collaborated with the Nature Conservancy (Maryland/DC chapter) and Maryland Department of Natural Resources to improve the understanding of how natural habitats strengthen coastal resilience and advance multidisciplinary research methods for ecosystem-based climate adaptation.

Graduate Research Assistant

May-August (2016-2018)

Flood Hazards Research Lab, GMU Virginia, USA

  • I applied coastal hydrodynamic (ADCIRC) and Wave (SWAN) models to estimate flood impacts from storm surge and sea level rise on coastal properties and communities in the Chesapeake Bay region. I also participated in the in-situ monitoring of coastal hydrodynamics, topographic surveys, and vegetation sampling in coastal wetlands.

Research Associate

June 2012- Jan 2015

Institute of Water and Flood Management Dhaka, Bangladesh
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology

  • I applied 2D hydrodynamic and storm surge models (Delft 3D) to estimate tidal flooding for different hydrological conditions, impact of cyclones on coastal flooding, and delineate linkages between fluvial-tidal regimes and coastal ecosystems in the estuarine systems of Bangladesh. I also applied the 1D model (HEC-RAS) to characterize estuarine flows for different seasonal and hydrological characteristics.

Lecturer/ Research Assistant II

Jan 2014 - July 2014

Center for Climate Change and Environmental Research
BRAC University, Dhaka, Bangladesh

  • For institutional capacity development, I led their research group on storm surge and hydrodynamic modeling to assess the impact of inundation on coastal areas. I contributed to formulating a basin-wide modeling framework to evaluate the effects of climate change on the water resources systems of Bangladesh.

CoP 30 Flood Risk Viz: We show flood risks from reef loss & climate change in hashtag#Bridgetown, hashtag#Barbados ahead of the convening in Belem, Brazil.

At CoP, please find me, including at:

👉 Tues Nov 11, 11am, Insurance House
👉 Fri Nov 14, 2:15, Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (DRI) Pavilion

The video uses game engine technology to visualize the results of our hydrodynamic and socio-economic models; one part of the process we use for estimating climate risks and nature’s benefits. This video shows flooding with and without reefs for Barbados. These results include estimates of waves and surge from 50-year storm events with current sea level.

Project supported by UCSC Center for Coastal Climate Resilience, Caribbean Biodiversity Fund, AXA Research Fund and NSF Strong Coasts, hashtag#NVIDIAGrant.

Modeling Team: David Gutiérrez-Barceló, Ali M Rezaie, Pelayo Menendez Fernandez, Borja Gonzalez Reguero
